The Woman and the Car

A chatty little handbook for women who motor or want to motor

By Dorothy Levitt

London: John Lane, The Bodley Head; New York: John Lane Company, MCMIX.
Printed by Ballantyne & Co. Limited.

Dorothy Levitt (1882–1922) was the first British woman racing driver. First published in 1909, The Woman and the Car is an early motoring handbook written specifically for women, covering driving, car maintenance and practical advice for women motorists.

Original green cloth binding with pictorial decoration to the front cover. The binding is solid and intact, with some fading to the spine, which remains legible. The front cover retains good colour, with very light staining and general signs of age. The cloth remains intact.

The fore-edge and lower edges of the text block are untrimmed and show foxing. The top edges are trimmed and retain their original dark green colouring reasonably well.

Internally, the pages are generally clean and in reasonable condition, with some age-related toning. Orange-brown staining is present on the first and last pages of the text block. The first page bears a previous owner's inscription dated September 9th 1916. The title page carries the embossed blind stamp, “Review Copy with John Lane's Compliments”. No further writing, highlighting or underlining noted.

Several leaves remain unopened, with their edges still joined. The book includes eight pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear, covering motoring products, clothing, motor accessories, tyres, and fiction published by John Lane.

A well-preserved example of the 1909 edition, with publisher's review-copy stamp and unopened leaves.
